Short story of a lady that disguised as a man to join the army so that she could fight for independence...

Deborah simpson (1760-1827) was a schoolteacher who joined the fight for independence. She diguised herself as a man and enlisted in the army as ''Robert shurtliff.'' In ine battle she was hit in the thigh by a musket ball, but she dug it out with her own knife so the doctors would not learn her secret. When the truth came out, ''shurtliff'' was given an honarable discharge and simpson became a national heroine.
