All-new RAV4 shines at the Lagos Motor Show

It was the synosure of all eyes at the last Lagos Motor show at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. It was like the Nigerian motoring public was waiting for it, as most visitors took turns to look at the all-new Toyota RAV4. Though Toyota Nigeria Limited, displayed all their model line up at the fair, the fourth generation RAV4 was no doubt the star of the event.
The reason could not be far from the fact that it was Toyota’s latest addition to the Nigerian market or due to its trendy design which Toyota Motor Corporation described as “a revolutionary new design concept.” Bold, stylish design and uniquely commanding presence distinguishes the new RAV4 from its competitors.
Young men, ladies, children and their parents all had something that attracted them to the new RAV4. The ushers at Toyota’s stand during the motor show, had lots of explanations to make.
They were bombarded with questions ranging from the engine capacity of the car, trim levels, safety features, performance, comfort etc. Though the ushers were not experts, they tried to explain the little they could and refer some to Toyota Nigeria staff.
Toyota brought two versions of the RAV4 to the fair – the leather and upholstery versions, both highly spaced. But the top of the range which comes in leather trim comes with extra features.
Under the hood of the all-new RAV4 is a powerful 2.4 litre engine with 16 valve DOHC with dual VVT-i. With this advanced engine, the RAV4 offers enjoyable and stable driving along with all-round practicality unique to its compact size. Mated to this engine is a six-speed super-intelligent ECT (electronically controlled transmission). This transmission achieves excellent dynamic performance with a smooth shift feel, thereby guarantying excellent fuel economy and quietness.
The all-new RAV4’s off-road prowess comes from its powerful engine and suspension, coupled with its 4WD mode. The front suspension adopts MacPherson struts with rigid and compact L-shaped lower control arms. The rear utilises rigid and compact trailing arm double wishbone suspension.
This combination simultaneously attains ride comfort and handling stability.
As a master of all terrain, the RAV4 sport model with Dynamic Torque Control 4WD, keeps  it accurately on track without incurring oversteer due to the driver’s steering input while conering. The system instantaneously adjusts front/rear wheel torque distribution based on analysis of sensor inputs on steering angle, yaw rate and other parameters, helping to ensure a drive that is line with your intention.
Also, turning on the sports mode switch in the D-range activities, D-range sport control. This switches the switch control to a sportier setting. In addition, turning on the 4WD mode switch maximises rear wheel torque making it easier to escape from deep mud or sand.
Apart from the 4WD the new RAV has other features like Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control. The hill start assistant control helps maintain the vehicle’s stationary position and ensures smooth start even on steep inclines by automatically applying brake pressure to all four wheels, while the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the acceleration pedal. The Downhill assist control assists the driver during steep decent by automatically applying hydraulic pressure to the brakes, maintaining a consistently safe low speed.
The RAV4’s other extensive safety features include seatbelts, back sonar/rear-view monitor, SRS airbags etc. While the spare tyre has been concealed under the luggage compartment, the entire design has changed completely with even more space, for occupants and luggages.
The interior is inviting with meticulous attention to comfort and ease of use.
